Edward Zwick, Director of 'Blood Diamond': "Sorious was a Godsend… He was a friend, a consultant, an authority. He was the soul of the production."
Forthcoming Hollywood blockbuster 'Blood Diamond' starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly is set against the backdrop of the chaos and civil war in 1990's Sierra Leone. The film follows the fate of three characters and the quest for a rare pink diamond.
Researching the film, Ed Zwick ('Glory', 'Last Samurai') was led to Insight News Television. "I went online to look up a documentary I had heard about called 'Cry Freetown' (Insight News TV 2000) Zwick recalls. "Sorious Samura's documentary about Sierra Leone is the single most authoritative record of what happened there during the civil war. While many journalists were fleeing the country and much of the world chose to ignore what was happening, here was someone who stayed and actually filmed it."
Zwick determination for authenticity led to Sorious being invited to consult on the film. Sorious worked with director and cast in South Africa and Mozambique.
